2018. THANK YOU
Please note: cryptocurrency donations are not included in this report.
In 2018 Podari.Life significantly increased the program that covered unregistered medicines for cancer treatment. "Unregistered" means that Russian hospitals cannot buy them on their own expense, and that's why Russian patients need our - and your - help.
Podari.Life has three ongoing programs:
First program provides doctors, hospitals and researchers with a current access to Western academic and clinical research - via relevant journals and database subscriptions paid by Podari.Life. The program also provides scientists in the field of cancer research with grants to participate in international conferences and exchanges. In 2018, Podari.Life had spent $41 167 on this program.
Second program covers rare and unregistered medications needed to cure children in Russian hospitals, primarily Dmitry Rogachev National Research Center of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology. The total expense for this Podari.Life program was $528 459
Third program covers treatment and rehabilitation outside of Russian national health system - usually, in German or Israeli hospitals for Podari Zhizn wards. These patients have extremely rare forms of childhood cancer or were initially treated abroad and need follow-up operations like endoprosthesis manipulations (kids grow, you know). This program cost in 2018 was $209 907, in particular for Lera Abakumova who successfully received her treatment with your support.
Our enlarged capacity in 2018 (almost 10 times to 2017!) occurred thanks to gifts like yours, but also because of crypto-currency initiative we endeavored. Gracious crypto-donors gifted Podari.Life and its cause a significant sum of bitcoins (and other assets) that was used to cover the cost of our programs.
In 2019, we aspire to continue our efforts to help Russian doctors in their fight with childhood cancer. Our programs continue to support academic and clinical development of medical personnel in hospitals and research centers, provide life-saving medicines for patients in Russia and - to the best of our capacity - cover the costs of treatment and rehabilitation when it is needed.
lera
Lera was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma at just 6 years old. After beating cancer, she faced new challenges—complications with her prosthetic leg left her in constant pain and limited mobility. Despite years of surgeries and setbacks, Lera has grown into a determined, bright young woman. With support from Podari.Life donors, Lera underwent another surgery at the University Clinic of Münster to continue lengthening her leg. Even in the hospital, she studies biology and chemistry to prepare for medical school. She’s also a competitive swimmer in the Winners Games and dreams of one day skateboarding without holding onto a wall. With your help, Lera is one step closer to walking freely—and chasing every dream.
foscavir for lera - $6,059
Lera, 10 years old, has been battling leukemia for three years. She first came to Moscow from the Chuvash Republic in 2015 and responded well to treatment, but sadly relapsed in 2017. A bone marrow transplant became necessary—essentially restarting her entire immune system. Soon after the transplant, Lera developed a viral infection that would be harmless to a healthy child but was life-threatening for her. Doctors at the Dima Rogachev Center prescribed Foscavir, a proven antiviral drug not registered in Russia. Thanks to your support, we were able to purchase the medication.
defitelio for alyona: €34,000
Alyona, 6 years old, was diagnosed with leukemia as a baby, just 10 months old. Her rare and aggressive illness required a bone marrow transplant to survive. Alyona’s mother was a matching donor—but due to a previous hepatitis C infection, the transplant couldn’t proceed without Defitelio, a critical liver-protective medication not available in Russia. The cost was far beyond the family’s reach. Thanks to your generous support, we were able to purchase the medication in time. Alyona began her treatment on June 1, and the transplant was successfully performed on June 9. Her recovery won’t be easy, but she now has a real chance at life—all because of you.
Defitelio for Kamil and others, covering costs of nearly $57,000
Kamil, 7 years old, was diagnosed with thalassemia at just one year old—a rare disorder that prevents the normal production of hemoglobin. He has spent most of his life in the Dmitry Rogachev Center, missing out on the childhood experiences every child deserves. Now preparing for a bone marrow transplant, Kamil requires ongoing treatment to protect his liver from the effects of constant blood transfusions. One critical medication is Defitelio, the only effective treatment for a life-threatening complication called VOD (veno-occlusive disease). This drug is not registered in Russia and must be purchased abroad. Thanks to your support—and with help from Gift of Life donors—we were able to buy several courses of Defitelio for Kamil and others, covering costs of nearly $57,000. Your donations make a real, life-saving difference.
